Everytime I visit my relatives in Daveyhulme, Lancashire, I've been told that they have a resident hedgehog. I still have not managed to see it (it apparently hibernates all year!), but I have not given up hope yet.
Does anyone have a resident hedgehog in the garden, or at least a hedgehog which is seen on a regular basis?
If you do, could I be permitted to visit the next time I'm in the UK ?
Thank you Richard! I keep hoping my relatives will locate a hedgehog for me so that I don't have to trundle myself all over the UK, but I would really like to finally see a hedgehog .
At our old house there was a small pipe in the ground and one morning when we went outside we noticed there was a hedgehog stuck headfirst in it! We managed to carefully leaver it out of the ground with a a small stick and it trundled off into the bushes like nothing has happened!
Needless to say after that we blocked up the pipe so no poor animal would get stuck in there again.
That's a good thing, Xeract. I would not want to hear of a poor hedgehog stuck headfirst in a pipe. It does make me wonder how many animals die due to that cause? One hears of the birds striking windows and the wind vanes, but I don't hear much about animals getting stuck in places, except sometimes wild animals getting trapped in barbed wire...
We pick up baby hedgehogs (hoglets) every year & take them to Hedgehog Rescue in Lancashire. This is usually late autumn when the parents have had a second litter & they are not going to make a good hibernation weight. They have to weight about at least 20ozs to survive the winter. Last year we rescued about 6 of them , 4 having been found by big burly firemen at the local fire station. They are then fed during the winter & kept warm so they do not hibernate & then they are released on water board land in the spring.
Sorry Kingfisher , I have looked but it seems that we were too busy rescuing them to take pics but I will try to remember next time. One of the ones rescued from the fire station died on its way to the rescue centre while I was stuck in a traffic jam after a car accident on the motorway. We were very upset. These little ones get hungry & come out during the day or go in the gutters searching for food that's when we find them. Nice little things with black button noses.
We went to a small local country fair today & luckily Hedgehog rescue was there. So as I promised I took some pics just for Kingfisher. It was quite a big one too.
I am sure we have many hedgehogs residing in our local area, because the poor things are always squashed on the roads. However since living where I have for many years, I have only seen one out and about at night.
I think road users should be so much more careful where hedgehogs are concerned
It's fine at night to see them. It's during the day we pick them up as there is usually something wrong with them. Speaking to the lady who actually does the rehabilitation of them, they will be expecting lots from second broods born this year because of the weather.

Hi, I have a pair of hedgehogs, they come to my door every night to be fed, they even share the food with the cat. They will eat anything you put out for them. Lynn

Hi Lynn, welcome to the forums!
That's amazing that they will even share food with your cat! How did you manage to get them to come to your door originally? Was it by accident?
Tibbar, those are some great pics. Is that you holding the hedgehog in the first one? It looks like it could be painful with all the spikes.

Hi Riana, I have always fed the birds and one night I looked out and the hedgehogs were just eating what I put out, I just kept feeding them and now they are here every night. Lynn
