What's this?

last year I saw one of these little plants pop up in a small nearby wood, the same again this year, so I took a snapshot. It's no doubt something simple, but I have no idea what it is. It's a small green shoot, about six inches tall, with a cluster of red berries on the top.
Anybody know?

Unofortunately I don't know but I would love to know what it is too because I have seen several this year and last and always wondered what they are.

It looks to me like a plant called Lord and ladies (Arum maculatum). It's berries are poisonous and can be fatal to young children and animals. An interesting looking plant though, and I love its name.

definitely Arum maculatum or Lords and Ladies, Cuckoo Pint and probably many other names.
I have seen some huge ones this year, probably as a result of the wetter weather.

RE: What's this?
Fantastic! Thanks guys
It was such an odd looking thing that I just had to find out what it was called, but I had no luck at all searching the web with various descriptive words.
This is a very helpful forum. Nice one.

By the way, welcome to Wildlife UK!
Your blog is most interesting, and I agree with you about nature being more interesting the more you learn.

Thanks for the welcome.
This looks like a nice little community. I found it by accident when searching for UK nature websites (of which it seems there are far too few). I'll put a link to it in my blog, so that anybody who breezes past my little corner of the web can find it too.
