RE: The sun has come out!
Well I had a look even though I know what it looks like & found ' Sheep's Bit Scabious, Sheep Scabious - Jasione laevis' You're right it is part of the campanulae family & I am astounded to find that out.It looks like a miniature scabious blue in colour & quite a flatish head. according to internet it likes cliffs etc . I can't remember where I have seen it though.

Haven't got any pics of our cattle yet - will add when I do. However, Sussex are easily recognised by their rich red-brown colour. They are also very placid animals, so well suited to put on land where they are likely to come into contact with people.
The following link to the Waverly herd site gives some good pics and info on the breed:

Thank you, TimberWolf. I have never seen Sussex cattle in the US. Apparently they are considered a rare breed here.

STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS... STOP PRESS...
Latest weather report is that it will be dry tomorrow
I certainly hope so, as I'll be working outside.

Raining like mad here! We've got our weathers reversed .
Time to go for another ride on the mountain bike, as getting muddy is what it's all about on the MTB.

The sun is out! Its actually quite hot as well, which is a first for the summer. I've heard that many places are still getting a lot of rain with flooding though, so its not all good.

Sorry to hear about the rain kingfisher
Its not raining here but forecast isn't looking good for the next few days, lets hope they get it completely wrong and that we have a heat wave. Not likely as the weather reporter said that the cahnce of a heatwave this summer is 0%!
Apparently the rain we are getting usually falls in the sea to the North, but for some reason has stopped directly over us this year.

RE: The sun has come out!
Back to bright sun today. Oddly though, even though we are not yet in August, it has already started to get a bit chilly in the mornings.
Something tells me that here in the state of Washington there will be no heat wave either! But I will be heading east over the Snoqualmie Pass in mid-August, and I will see if Eastern Washington is any warmer (it usually is considerably warmer than the western side of the mountains).

This has become a bit of a pattern - one dry day followed by two very wet ones. Still, we had the consolation of lighting and enjoying a huge bonfire to dispose of all the scrub we had gathered from our path clearing exercise. Men in their element... chopping things down and starting a big fire .

Next you will be talking about dragging ferrous objects beneath the undercarriage of your car so that you can watch sparks (one of my husband's favourite memories of his teenage past).
Real men stuff!

RE: The sun has come out!
I heard that summer was coming in September, but I hope you're right. To get any summer would be nice!
Kingfisher, I haven't heard that before but sounds like an interesting idea. Thanks for sharing

The full story:
My husband's first job included the use of a company vehicle. He was driving back to the office one evening when he hit something on the road. He did not think much about it (he knew it was not an animal, but some road debris), and then realised after glancing in his mirror that great showers of sparks were filling the air behind him as he drove, producing a roostertail of light.
When he stopped and checked, he discovered that he had managed to wedge a chimney stovepipe underneath the car. He laughs about it every time he thinks about it, and it's always a producer of laughs when we drive by any road debris that looks as if it could possibly be made of iron .
Real men stuff, indeed! Gentlemen, don't tell your spouses or significant others where you picked up this idea, or I shall be getting in trouble .

Has summer arrived at last?
Spent yesterday clearing footpaths in the sunshine. Phew! it was hot work in that heat, especially once the bonfires were going. By the end of the day we would have welcomed some cool rain

Please disregard my optimism. Normal service has been resumed; it's raining again.
