The Piedwagtail
Over the last few weeks i have been having a pair of piedwagtails visiting the garden for food, they bob around between the starlings for fallen seed, they are amazing little birds and its a privilidge to have them visit every day.
Here is a couple of shots taken yesterday of one of them.

You cant! Both same plumage. I don't know if females sing and hold territories so you might be able to tell if its a male whern it perches up singing!

Same here Tawny. I have recently been visited by a pair of Pied Wagtails. They come every morning at about 10am, and I mean EVERY morning! I won't be able to get pictures at that time of the day becasue I am at school 5 days a week, and usually playing golf on the weekend.

Aah.. thanks. I got a bird ID book today and in it it says that the female has dark grey, slightly blotchy back and less black on the crown and throat. This may help a little.
Jamie, you have a busy life......GOLF!!!! are you good???

Yes it might. The trouble with Pied Wags is there is a lot of variation in plumage. I'll try and dig a few photos out.

In my experience its hard to tell the difference unless you have a pair of opposite sex together then as your book states the male looks sharper and the female a little drabber but not by much. So if they are seen individually it is hard to tell the difference. They are magnificent dainty and elegant birds i love them. On my local beach in Falmouth you sit still and they will come within feet of you.
Jamie i bet your golf play is better than mine.
