Wow lovely shots Tawny - I saw one yesterday at my friends house in her garden, wish I had my camera as it stayed forever on the nuts!

Tawny those photos are excellent!!! Whereabouts in Scotland were they taken? When I was on holiday in the Lake District last year I saw my first Nuthatch and it was such a memorable moment!!!

Thanks Every one, glad you like them...We stayed at a cottage on the borders, in Bonchester Bridge, we set up a feeder made from a moss covered branch and hid the nuts in the moss, along with the hanging feeder, it was close to the kitchen window,so i set up my camera on a beanbag on the kitchen worktop pointing through the window, their was a pair of nuthatches and they came regularly throughout the day, they were quite shy but throughout the week we managed to get some good shots.

Going back this year!! hope to see them again.

I've never been to the Borders but I would love to, been to Dumfries & Galloway which isn't that far away from there. Might go next year as we have already booked our holidays for this year, Skye in April and Argyll in September. And I must make a note to visit Skylark down in Devon sometime

Have had a look on your website Bev and your photographs are just great. If I had a decent camera I think I would take up bird or landscape photography.

Thats a coincidence, we have a holiday booked in April in Dumfries and Galloway, and then back to Bonchester Bridge in October, i love Scotland...hope to live there one day

Sorry getting slightly off topic about Nuthatches I know but ... where are you staying in Dumfries & Galloway if you don't mind me asking? We love it down there, we first went in 2005 and again the year after because we loved it so much!!! I would love to live there when I am older

Are nuthatches that rare, then? I saw one at Lymm Dam when I was there in 1993, along with a treecreeper. I was excited to see the treecreeper, as I have seen the US version of the treecreeper only once.

There are four species of nuthatches here in the US, and I have seen all of them. The species looking most like the UK nuthatch is the Red-breasted Nuthatch, and they are relatively common here--at least, it's possible to hear the distinctive call at least once a day in my garden.

Kingfisher

There not exactly rare Kingfisher but they are just starting to venture north of the border into Scotland. In England and Wales they are relatively common and widespread.

I have never seen one before, but I would love to!

We are staying at Glenlee Holiday Cottages, New Galloway in Castle Douglas.
Scotland is a beautiful place, and you can go back time and time again and always find somewhere beautiful to go and the wildlife is amazing!
