Snakes in Northwest???
Hi,
I m hoping to travel around the UK to photograph some wildlife and I have decided to make the Adder and Grass snakes my first 2 targets.
I live on the Wirral northwest England (In between Chester and Liverpool), and I was hoping someone could give me a pointer on where geographically to start?
So if anyone could give me some ideas it would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mark

RE: Snakes in Northwest???
Hi Mark, pleased to meet you
You chose some reasonably difficult targets, made more difficult because at this time of year they are rarely seen outside. You are much more likely to see snakes in the summer when it is warm and they will be out bathing in the sun.
I believe grass snakes are more commonly found in the south, and arent in Ireland at all. Adders can be found all over the UK.

RE: Snakes in Northwest???
Thanks Rianna,
I m not look for them right now, but I will be in the summer. Will be going camping around the UK, so I am only planning at the moment.
I was hoping to find that there was some snakes pretty close by so I could just go on day trips too. So if you say Adders are found all over, then maybe there is hope of a local (ish) place to spot one.
Thanks again for your reply.
Mark

I'd check out you local wildlife groups first. Im sure they would be able to help. There are plenty of heathland areas in Lancashire that i presume will hold Adder? Dont know for sure. Hatfield and Thorne Moors in South yorks are good for Adder.

Mark check out this link for the Cheshire Wildlife Trust.
http://www.cheshirewildlifetrust.co.uk/
It has a list of nature reserves so you can browse what ones interest you. For Adders I'd check out the heathland and woodland ones and for the Grass Snake look at the ponds and merses. A sunny day in spring (March, April or May) would probably be the best time to look for them as they will be coming out of their hibernation sites, will be relatively sluggish and looking for a basking area to warm up. Remember, Adders are poisonous but they will only strike you if you are provoking it and we all know thats not a good idea. Grass Snakes on the other hand, although not poisonous, can produce foul-smelling and persistent faeces that can stain your hands and clothes, if you decide to get close enough for it to do that though
Happy snake hunting Mark!!!
