Second bird flu case found

A second case of the strain of bird flu H5N1 has been found at a turkey farm on the Norfolk Suffolk border. Already 9000 have been killed, but I would assume that there will be more culled and also more found positive too.

RE: Second bird flu case found

I think that the second case was found on a bird that had already been slaughtered, as all the hturkeys on that particular farm have already been killed. Lets hope it hasn't spread outside the farm.

68000 more birds are to be slaugtered in Suffolk, Defra say it is just precautionary because of the other outbreaks in the area. A bit worrying though!

That is almost an unimaginable amount of birds. I feel so sorry for the farmers who are going to lose all their stock.

I can't get myself to be worried about Bird Flu though, not yet anyway. The fact that it hasn't even been discovered in humans yet, even though it may be able to mutate, means I'm less worried about it than other things.

It's terrible for the farmers, and it's horrible to hear of so many birds being slaughtered just as a precaution, but I suppose it is neccessary and it's the only course of action that could be taken if the h5N1 strain is really as potentially dangerous as it has been made out to be. Let's hope it's not!

"Bird flu cause probe inconclusive" - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7118876.stm

Sounds like it's a bit of bad luck, and also a bit of negligence on behalf of the farmers which is why the second farm got infected.

RE: Second bird flu case found

It sounds like they really have no idea how it got here, although my money is on wild birds carrying it. And there's not really much you can do about that. As the report said:

Quote:
It says that there are two main theories about how the disease was introduced to the UK - either via contamination from people from a country with an undisclosed infection in their domestic flocks, or infected wild birds.

There is currently no evidence to support either theory.

there is always going to be a chance that wild birds infect domestic ones, but this case seems to have been dealt with pretty well. Even though it is terrible how many birds had to be slaughtered.
