What pets do you own?

• 2 Guinea Pigs - both 3 years old
• 1 Rabbit, coming close to 7 years old now!
• 2 cats - both only a year old
  

I have only two official pets a sweet dwarf rabbit called pepsi who is about 8 now I think and a mad cross breed dog called Murphy, just over a year old. He was a resue pup from southern Ireland and I think the stress of his early start has left his mark. But we all adore him and he has a lovely character. The other 3 are not officially animals as they are my children, but I wonder at times with the mess they make!!

I have three cats, all tortoiseshells, and all rescues, bless their little hearts! One of the rescues, Anniebear, was at the local Animal Control Facility. She was on her next to last day (the animals there are only kept for 30 days to be adopted) when I came in. I had just had to have my beloved 17 year old Persian cat put down about a week earlier, and had no intention of adopting another cat so soon. My heart had a different idea, and my feet took me down to the shelter. Annie was an older cat, estimated to be around four years old, and she has a very kinked tail. I fell in love with her, and went home to let my husband know about her. We came back the next day and adopted her. The entire staff in the building gave us a cheer, they were all so happy that Annie had been adopted.

1 X black Gerbil (Velvet)
Numerous tropical fish

I am thinking about getting a pet and wondered what your all thought made the best pet. There is the obvious dog or cat but fancied trying something slightly different that didn't need lots of walks as I work. Any suggestions? Thanks Richard

Cats really are pretty good all around pets.  Mine are all indoor cats, so they require boxes, but they keep themselves busy.

Dogs are quite a bit of trouble if one isn't retired.  Even a small dog needs to be walked.

Tropical fish can be fairly easy--something like mollies, guppies, white clouds.  These are nicely coloured, not excessively aggressive, inexpensive, and don't require big tanks.  I had a school of white clouds for many years--they would breed just as the older ones were ready to pass on to their reward, and kept going and going.

Snakes, for the less squeamish.  They require feeding only once every couple of weeks (at least for the type I've got, king and milksnakes), don't move around much, and look quite pretty.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Rabbits and guinea pigs and be very reqarding pets that don't require a lot of attention other than feeding and cleaning out.

Over the last 40 years, I have been without a dog only for about 3 years, which was after my last dog died. She was such a wonderful friend that I thought I would always be comparing any new dog with her. However, I now have another dog - a collie of course - which is very different to my last one and therefore of no comparison.

As well as giving me a reason to walk for at least an hour each day, she keeps the dreadful cats out of the garden and once again our garden is full of birds.

May introduce our new pets into the forum?

Wow, they are great! Thanks for the picture with the fifty pence, I didn't realise how small they are until I saw that!

How old are they? Have you named them yet?

No names yet. They are 1 year old Hermmans.

I love them, wish I could get some! There used to be a tortoise rescue pond in our local garden centre, and its amazing how long you can watch animals that don't move around a great deal.

Perhaps there was something wrong with the ones at the rescue centre Richard?????? I also have 2 adults one of which I have had for 40 years & she is an escape artiste , she thinks nothing of launching herself off & down a 3 foot rockery & she can fair motor.....
Come to think of it have you never seen the odd one going up the motorway in the newspapers only to be caught by the police. They can cover vast distances. I think the ones in the garden cente were bored.
Like all reptiles they do need specialist care & toroise husbandry has changed over the last 40 years.

I also have a Tokay , 1.4.0 Leopard geckos (1 male 4 females)...i also have a ferret called fergus , 4 Tarantulas which are a Mexican Red knee , Salmon pink , Curly haired , and baby Cameroon Red baboon

Wow , I love the snakes , we held some for the first time on hols last year, I am sure it was a whip snake. My son has a leopard spotted gecko. I also love the african grey my uncle has one but it hates him because when he first got it ,it flew into the curtains & he caught it with a towel & it hasn't forgiven in the last 15 years. As for the mynah , I haven't seen one in years but a pet shop that I used to buy tortoises from as a kid in the 60's used to have one which talked really well.
PIty you haven't got a fish tank for the Chad to slaver up!!!!
