Out and About today!

Hi all!

Went out and about to our local reservoir today as it wasn't raining for a change!

Anyway, took my camera as per usual and got a shot of this bird.. any ideas what it is? I think maybe a Whinchat ???

Also this rather handsome Dragonfly or maybe a Skipper of some sort? Got no idea tbh haha!

and another one of it...

I'm so lucky that I don't have to work lol! Icon_biggrin

RE: Out and About today!

Last Sunday (whilst hubby was watching the Grand Prix Icon_rolleyes ) I took myself off to High Crag near our village and was amazed to see a pair of Red Kites! I'm sure they were nesting on this craggy area...

Couldn't get a half decent pic as my camera wouldn't focus on the birds as they went too fast Icon_sad However, I did get a pic of a new bird for me a Stonechat.... I was drawn to his alarm call as it sounded like that of a corncrake funnily enough! He was obviously nesting near to where I was walking over the bracken.

and I also saw a pair of Little Owls that were also nesting in the same spot along the crag! I heard the youngster/s screeching before the parent flew out and settled in this silver birch tree, then all went very quiet...

Oooo! I love Yorkshire!! Icon_biggrin

I love all those pictures, especially the close up of the dragonfly! I have to say I don't know what the bird is either, although I'm sure someone here does Icon_smile

RE: Out and About today!

I'd love to know for sure what the bird is (one extra to add to my photo portfolio lol!). Will have to buy some research books on birds, butterflies, moths and insects methinks!

I have a hunch it's a Whinchat, but would love to have it confirmed by someone in 'the know'! Icon_wink

It's hard to tell from the way your bird is facing, but it certainly would appear to be a female Whinchat.

As to your dragonfly--not my specialty, I'm afraid. A beautiful photo, though.

Mmm I think so too unless someone knows otherwise. I couldn't get a front shot as it flew off and unfortunately I didn't see it again - I just snap away and hope for the best lol! Icon_smile

Thanks for the comment about the Dragonfly photo! I'm loving my new camera Icon_wink Icon_biggrin

RE: Out and About today!

Looks very much like the picture of a Whinchat in my bird book (not that that's a font of indesputable knowledge, as its more helpful telling you what a bird isn't rather than what it is Icon_biggrin ). It does state that a distinctive feature of all Whinchats (including juveniles) is a white strip above the eye.

btw - fantastic photographs.

Hmm... can't see a white stripe from this angle even when I blow it up lol!

Perhaps it's a female Stonechat???

RE: Out and About today!

After looking at the RSPB site for a stonechat, it does look very like one. Have a look at http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguid...stonechat/
