Has anyone else noticed that bluebells seem to be cropping up all over the place this year?

Usually I see them in a few specific woods, but I've seen little patches in places they have never been before. It must have been a good year for them!

I think last year was particularly bad for a show of flowers but the wet weather last summer may have extended their season and swelled their bulbs for a bumper crop this year. We are now having a cold wet spring which as with primroses should lead to prolonged flowering again.

Where we have planted native bulbs they are looking really good this year.

Bear in mind though that it can take 7 years for them to flower from seed so new colonies could have been a while in the making

I have noticed a few more bluebells around this year now that you've mentioned it, although not a huge amount. They do seem to spring up in unlikely places though.

One has sprung up at the end of my garden - just that one for the first time on the lawn!


Also with fly!

I can't say I've noticed anymore than usual this year actually, although they are as spectacular as ever in the local woodland. Definitely the most beautiful two weeks of the year when they are fully out!

I can't say wheter it is a better year for the Bluebell, as i am in a different location. But here there a lot that are coming up. Another thing to remember if you do plant Bluebells they can be very hard to get rid of once established, not that you would probobly want too, due to the amount of bulblets that they produce.

[Eno]---We think that the bluebells are certianly as good this year as past years. We're lucky to have a garden full of them and this weekend they are at there best. We only regestered with this forum this morning. May be, once we get the hang of things we'll post a picture.

Yes, we havent had an entry from Paul (Cornwall Birder) yet, so maybee he is trying to get one.

I'd go for pink. There was some colour variation among the blues, but the pinks were quite distinctive. Always tricky to get colours quite right in photos.
