Mining bees found

I was very pleased to read that one of our rarest bees has managed to set up camp in the Uists. I have to say I had not heard of the Mining bee but on the island over 10 colonies have been found.

They aren't like bumble bees in that here is no workers, but they do like to nest close to each other. It's great news that so many have been found on the island because there are relatiely few other places where they can be found in the UK.

RE: Mining bees found

Hmmm!!! Very interesting. I don't think that I have ever seen one. It is good to know that something so rare is thriving though. I think that since I have joined this forum I have begun to appreciate all sorts of different things whereas before I might not have thought about it.

It's one of the great things about learning more about the world around you. Like me keeping the blog--I have learned more about my neighbourhood in a few short weeks than I had in almost 20 years of living here!

RE: Mining bees found

That is good news, thanks for posting it. I hadn't heard of mining bees either, but I guess that shows how few of them there are. As they are not native to the UK, where were they originally from?
