Lunar eclipse - March 3rd

Just thought I should let our members know of the lunar ecclipse on March the 3rd. In Europe it will take place late at night, high in the sky so be ready!

I'll try to remember that date, although knowing my luck (and the british weather) it will probably be cloudy.

Very true Icon_smile

That's always the problem with English astronomy in the Winter (and the other seasons too to be honest!). The weather the last few nights has been fairly clear but that could change very quickly. We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed.

There will still be a lunar eclipse in Washington, in fact there will be in the whole Northern hemisphere (I think). It will just be a bit earlier in the night though.

RE: Lunar ecclipse - March 3rd

After much digging, it appears that the state of Washington will see the lunar eclipse whilst the moon is rising, so it will probably be difficult to see. Not to mention that due to our weather (much like the UK's weather) it will probably rain! Or at least be cloudy.

However, I will make an effort to get out and attempt to view the eclipse, just in case it is visible.

It's beginning to look as if the weather will not be co-operating in my part of the world.  Cloudy skies/rain, and perhaps even snow Icon_sad are in the forecast for the next couple of days...

RE: Lunar eclipse - March 3rd

This Morning the weather is very bright and sunny without a cloud in the sky! The great British weather is very unreliable though as you all know...

Yes, we do! Here in my part of the world it is pouring rain...but that could change.

Well, I don't know about anyone else, but the eclipse was a no-show here. No rain--we had fog!

RE: Lunar eclipse - March 3rd

It was a perfect night here - not a coud in the sky (surprisingly).

I watched the moon move into the Earth's shadow and then when it is fully in shadow it takes on a reddish glow - it was spectacular.

Apparently a lot of ancient cultures used to fear the lunar eclipse because it looks like the Moon is being eaten and then appears blood red.

You can really see why. It was a perfect viewing night to me too and the red colour to the moon is was very eerie.

Now we know that this is simply from the blue light in the Earth's atmosphere being absorbed, but if you had no idea what was happening it would seem a very strange event.
