Kingfisher spottings?
As you can see from my name, I am very fond of the European, or Common Kingfisher.
I was lucky enough to see one in Wales a few years back, whilst visiting some relatives. I don't live in England, so I don't know how common it is to see one. I do know that my father, who grew up in Lancashire, had only ever seen one, which would seem to indicate that they are not at all common.
How many of us have seen the European, or Common Kingfisher? Where did you see it (if you can remember)?

Was that in Lancashire? Even the flash is unmistakable--although it's really much nicer to be able to study the bird at rest.

This was again next to the Irwell at Farnworth, Lancashire in Moses Gate Country Park. It is the first time I have ever come near to seeing a kingfisher. This is another indication of fish coming back into the river. (see waterlife thread)
Incidentally this area is park of the Croal Irwell Valley Regeneration & used to have a brick works on it 100 years ago. It has canals , the river & other open areas on it. Part of it is now a SSSI (Special Site of Scientific Interest) as it has Military Orchids growing there.

Wild growing orchids are always a reason for hope--they have such exacting requirements.
I can tell I am going to have to include the CIVR in my next trip home.
