On a more serious note, what is the creature before its a moth? Some sort of worm? Also if they were going to turn into a giant thing like that great moth, would they have to be big in size before they cocooned or would it already be in their genes regardless of size?

Caterpillars can be pretty large, have a look at this elephant hawkmoth caterpillar: http://www.rkmas.co.uk/elephant_hawk_moth.html
it's at least 8cm long

I found loads of those things when I was digging in my front garden some time ago. I just popped them back into the ground to let nature take it's course.

My guess was a moth, but I really have no idea.
