RE: Had any frog spawn yet?

Hi ladyloulee, welcome to the forums I love the name Icon_biggrin

I think even though we're having a warm time at the moment it's too early for frogspawn although I could be wrong. I haven't had any yet though.

It would be! I will keep you updated as to when I see the first lot. It will be a while yet though, especially as we seem to be having a cold snap at the moment.

RE: Had any frog spawn yet?

I saw my first few clumps today and lots of frog activity. I used to get some in my garden pond in the first week of Feb so on the south coast this is not unusual

Welcome to the forums South Coast Ranger. I'm pleased to hear you have been getting some spawn already, I actually thought they usually started a little later than this but it's interesting to hear that you usually get them around this time.

RE: Had any frog spawn yet?

Thanks for the welcome

Of course in recent years, late cold snaps have killed off the early spawn. Luckily frogs do not put all their eggs in one basket (I am carefully avoiding any puns here) and some produce spawn much later than others. I'm not sure if a single female can produce more than one lot of spawn in a season.

Obviously the rewards for early spawning if it stays mild are a great competitive edge and possibly an avoidance of some predators while the tadpoles are still small. Conversly, late spawners miss the cold snaps, which also kill off the competition.

I have an early record of frog spawn in a pond in Camborne Cornwall. Noticed the day after boxing day by three witnesses.

RE: Had any frog spawn yet?

Wow, that is early. I wonder if that frog spawn made it?

South Coast Ranger, it's interesting that they produce their spawn over such a range of time. It makes sense though, and obviously works. There hasn't been a cold snap this year so the early frogspawn should be doing quite well.

Bristol - I have seen lots of frog activity - 2 in the pond in the polytunnel - 3 in my large wildlife pond and 3 in my smaller pond... Last year I actually saw it being laid - very exciting, it came out really small and then expanded and sank to the bottom of the pond...

It's been close to a frost the last few days, lets hope it doesn't get any worse. Rowena, that must have been interesting to watch! I've never seen it being laid before.

yes it was really strange! it came out looking like black cavier! Then it expanded - no frong spawn yet though but the blokes were still clinging on this morning. Its meant to be sunny at the weekend so maybe that will make them want to lay!
