RE: Had any frog spawn yet?

It has been freezing the last four or five days. I much prefer it to wet weather but it's not so good for wildlife or plants, especially as it was followed by a relatively mild patch of weather.

I've seen some daffs too, but no frogspawn yet.

Not yet - the ponds were both iced over though colin did see one under the ice - sounds like something out the omen...

I think as it has been too cold the frogs have given up - bring on the hotter weather...

I would love to have some frogs! we built the pond and left it as natural as possible, but alas no residents! im obviously doing something wrong here, frogs and toads do come into the garden but dont stop at the Inn....any ideas?

That's strange that they don't go in, I didn't think frogs were particularly fussy about where they take up residence. I would say that perhaps they haven't found it yet, or have found it but are already "living" elsewhere at the moment. How long has the pond been there for?

Horay! 13 clumps of frogspawn in the big pond today and the mini daffodils have opened up! In the big pond, so that means the chickens have not attacked all the frogs up the top of the garden -

No frogspawn in the bottom pond though, although the water swirls when ever you go near it and I have seen one loan frog and one holding on tight to another!

Has your pond got any weed it it? If the frogs dont have any cover, maybe they wont go in there. Easy to get off freecycle!

The pond has been here for about 4 years, although its invariably small it has some pond plants and weed coverage.

RE: Had any frog spawn yet?

32 lumps of frog spawn this morning! - I have managed to put up a photo on my blog of the pond - I am so happy to have that many frogs. The pond is on a bit of land we aquired in the middle of a triangle of houses that used to be overgrown allotments (the previous occupier of this house destroyed it and turned it into a field). Therefore we have 25 (I just counted out the window) neighbours, whose garden all back onto my garden triangle to watch me running up the garden with the cat water pistol followed by an army of chickens and to hear me talking to the chickens and all animals in the garden. Must be a crazy site, especially in the middle of very local Bristolian suburbia!

Ladyloulee, all the blogs can be found at http://www.wildlifeuk.net/blogs/ or by clicking the blogs button at the top of the page. From there, you can get to Rowena's blog using the links on the right.

Still no spawn yet!
