Ground living bees/wasps??

We noticed the other day some holes in the garden & witnesses some sort of bee or wasps going in. Has anyone a clue what they are?

Notice you can just see one coming out in the lower right hand hole.

RE: Ground living bees/wasps??

Hmm, there are a few ground nesting wasps and bees at least, that is why many of them have been having a tough time this year as the ground is so wet, but unfortunately I'm not sure what type these are.

Even though it is very wet , our garden is quite dry as we are 4 feet higher than next door (as we live on a hill) & the soil is very sandy. We only took out an mock orange stump from that site a few weeks ago,so the insects have only just arrived.

Hi tibbar, did you get an id for this. It looks like the Field Digger Wasp .. Mellinus arvensis.

Chris.

Regards Chris.

No I didn't get an ID until yours. Very interesting as I know nothing about wasps & bugs & things. We did not see them for very long as the ground was disturbed when the conservatory was starting to be built. That is why we cleared the stump in the first place but I will keep my eyes open this year.
