Fly identification

Hello,

I came across this fly at a friends yesterday, we both had never seen it before but wondered what it was. He thought it might be a Sericomyia silentis, a sort of wasp like hover-fly, but I don't know where he got that from. Does anyone know what it is?

Thanks in advance

RE: Fly identification

I don't know that it is but, as I saw something very similar in the garden at the weekend, I'd love to know as well.

RE: Fly identification

From my son's Collins Gem book , how does this look?
It's a very colourful looking fly though, good pic.

RE: Fly identification

That's a brilliantly coloured photo, thanks for sharing it. It definitely looks like the hover-fly in tibbars book to me.
