Fire Rainbow

I was sent this image today and thought I'd share it with you all because it is a beautiful picture.
It is a fire rainbow and is apparently the rarest of all naturally occuring atmospheric phenomena. Clouds have to be about 20000 feet high, and contain just the right amount of ice crystals. The sunlight must then hit the clouds at precisely 58 degrees.

I'm not sure who took this image, so thanks to whoever did!

RE: Fire Rainbow

That took place in my home state!

Here is a link explaining it:

Unfortunately, I did not see it (a bit too far for me to see), but what a magnificent sight it must have been.

Sorry yes I forgot to say it occurred on the Washington/Idaho border. I don't know how far around the event it was visible, did you see anything of it?

No, unfortunately it's actually quite a long way to the border of Idaho. I believe it's around 300 miles or so to where this event took place.

Ah ok, It'a just that classic British misconception that states are much smaller than they are. Counties are so small in comparision it is often easy to forget how big states in America are!

Even in the US, it's easy to forget! People here think nothing of driving 60 or 70 miles ONE WAY to get to work.
