Favourite solar system object
What is your favourite solar system object to observe through your telescope or binoculars?
Mine has to be Saturn, the ring formations are amazing to see even with fairly low magnification telescopes. Seeing Jupiter with it's red spot is also a favourite of mine.
The moon is also a fascinating object to look at as you can really see the impact craters that cover its landscape.

RE: Favourite solar system object
WIth binoculars or even just the naked eye the moon is the best object to look at in the sky. We see it so often, but I doubt many people ever really take the time to look at it in detail. The way its surface is littered with craters makes me wonder why there were not more impacts on the Earth, or was there?

From what I know, in the early solar system there were many more asteroid impacts than there are now, which is why we don't see the moon or Earth being hit my asteroids anymore.
Someone might correct me on this, but wasn't the moon created from an asteroid impact on the Earth?

I have heard that too, but I'm not sure if it was from a reliable source. I would love to get some clarification on this from anyone who might know.

Your right, the best theory of how the moon is created is that a large asteroid hit the Earth, and the resulting debris began to orbit around the Earth eventually forming the moon. This has not yet been proven. but a lot of good evidence points this way.
