Falconers

I was watching Gordon Ramseys program today, and it had a really interesting section on catching hares. Because lead bullets spoils the carcass for eating, they used a golden eagle to catch the hare for them.

I had no idea that people still used birds of prey for hunting. I've heard it used in ancient times as it must have been a very effective and easy way if you could train the bird properly. It's good to hear that the skill is still alive.

RE: Falconers

I have heard people use them for getting rid of birds at airports , & pigeons when they become a pest. When we went to the local country fair 2 weeks ago ,we were looking at the birds of prey there, so I just looked at their website & they have a page on pest control. I know is isn't exactly catching prey for sport but at least it is working the birds.

RE: Falconers

The State of Washington (where I live) has a hunting season for falconry! I believe the usual prey hunted/taken consists of rabbits and various grouse. In addition, I believe that Seattle's International Airport (SeaTac) has falconers come every once in a while.

RE: Falconers

It sounds like they are very useful for keeping airports clear of smaller birds. I think it's great that people such as that website can make a living out falcony, as it is such an amazing skill.

There are a few places that can actually teach you to be a falconer. It's obviously very hard, and takes a long time to become proficient, but I would think it would be an amazing hobby.
