Eucalyptus/Gum Trees in UK

Hey all
I`m just wandering has the UK actually got any Eucalypt/gum trees?
As i saw one today, well what i`m 99% sure is one ,and i picked it`s leaf to try and ID it and well i`ve seen two trees that look similiar and that`s the Alpine Ash & Cider Gum and i`ve read there descriptions/locations and it says they`re both found in Australia.
And well this has annoyed me, and has made me think that they`re rare and people don`t know about them over here.

Cheers

It didn`t have any flowers.I`ll just upload the picture tommorrow mate thanks alot though.I saw a nice book in waterstones tuesday i really want to buy it.It`s like the most commonest trees. The one i`m using is collins tree guide, and it has trees in uk and europe andi don`t like that they have europe in them, or if they do they should split them into different sections like uk and europe or england ireland wales scotland europe etc.

to be honest carl nearly all guides cover britain and europe and its because most species are common to both, but at the same time most books do state british distribution. good luck mate.

RE: Eucalyptes/Gum Trees in UK

Apparently they can reach huge heights of over 40/ 50ft very quickly here as we have so much rain-they arent advised in gardens as they can drain the moisture from your soil and dont do your foundations any good either. Obviously in their native OZ its a lot drier.

Digeridoos are made of eucalyptus wood incidentally!

RE: Eucalyptus/Gum Trees in UK

I have a Eucalyptus tree in the garden (gunnii) I planted it about 10 years ago,but keep it under strict control as they grow VERY fast. The foliage is lovely in flower arrangements and smell nice when you rubb the leaves(clears the nose).

Think i might get OH to make me a digeridoo TassIcon_rolleyes

kk just googled it and i think your right, well i think there could be variations of it, because there`s many different types of bark and seeds. And the tree looks different to the one i`m on about. Thanks alot though.

NOT/EDIT:No you are right i was just looking at pictures in australia, and it`s also called Red River Gum.
