December Winner: Markulous and Year Winner: Wild Canon

Congratulations to Markulous on winning the final competition of 2009 and Wild Canon on winning the overall competition for the year!

The top 3 members this year were:

1st - Wild Canon (80 votes)
2nd - Markulous (40 votes)
3rd - Keith (33 votes)

Congratuations to all three of you and also a big thanks to everyone who entered this year. If you'd like to know your score then please contact Jamie.

As you know, this was Jamie's last month running the competition so a huge thank you to him from everyone at the forum. He's run the competition brilliantly and I'm sure you'll agree it's been a big success.

There will be no January competition this year but hopefully we should have something sorted for February.

Thanks and happy new year!

Emperor dragonfly

Went for a walk in the gravel pits next to my house, managed to get a quick picture of this awesome insect. Theyre really impressive close up.

Comments gladly received.
Cheers, Tom.

RE: Emperor dragonfly

hi tomw
liking the photo, not seen any emperors for a couple of years, but we have southern hawkers at work which are an impressive insect aswell as broad-bodied chasers, large red damselflies, beautifull and banded damoisselles, common blue and bluetailed damselflies and common coenagrion, but haven't managed to get the little critters to stay still long enough to get good photo's. They are excellent indicators of water quality as most dragonflies tollerate very little pollution, the nymphs are easy to find by taking a kick sample from a shallow gravel bottom streams and rivers.

RE: Emperor dragonfly

hi tom
looks like a beautifull damaoiselle but not entirely sure as the wings are a little darker on them, but that may be down to the light, definately a damselfly as wings are folded back over the body.

RE: Emperor dragonfly

Very nice pictures Tom.I love dragonflies find them fasicinating, though i think it has something to do with the fact that i hardly see them lol.
