Earth Quake

Yesterday at 11.50am we had an earth quake in Manchester measuring 2.5 on the richter scale. The last time was about 2002 & the British Geological Survey said the the centre was right in the middle of Manchester where it was recorded in 2002. The largest then of a series of tremors was 3.9.
The spokesman said quote "As earthquakes go it is quite insignificant."
They expect about 8 tremors a year in Britain.
Should be worried ? I was at work nearer Manchester than home & never even felt it. Icon_eek

RE: Earth Quake

I wouldn't be too worried, if you hadn't heard about it you never would have known after all. Still, it is a bit disconcerting, but as far as I know there have always been small earthquakes like that in Britain and there has never been a a major one. Not recently anyway.

We're very lucky in Britain in that we have very little extreme events like earthquakes compared to most countries.

RE: Earth Quake

Tibbar14, I would not worry about earthquakes until they hit about 5.0 on the Richter scale Icon_smile .

On 28 February, 2001, I experienced a 6.8 magnitude earthquake. It was the biggest I remember. VERY frightening.

Actually we are situated on the 'Pendleton fault' I have known this ever since I was little. We did have one big disruption but if I remember rightly I slept through it.
I would not like a 6.8 though.Icon_eek

RE: Earth Quake

A 6.8 is VERY powerful. I heard the earthquake before I felt it, too. Where I live has possibly dozens of faults, some of which are still undiscovered.

Growing up, we lived very close to the infamous San Andreas fault. It was always in the back of our minds. As school children (and actually, even now!) we practised earthquake drills...

RE: Earth Quake

Kingfisher, did you ever have to use your earthquake drills? A 6.8 must have been terrifying.

Yes, I did get to put the earthquake drills to use in the Nisqually Earthquake (the 28 February 2001). I was downstairs, reading. I heard a very low rumble, and instantly recognised what it was. I sprang up from my seat, ran to the doorjamb, and called to my husband (who was upstairs) "There's an earthquake! Brace yourself", and then two very sharp, powerful knocks hit, followed by pitching and swaying for what seemed forever, but was less than two minutes. I barely held on, and some pictures fell from the way. Luckily, other than the broken glass in the frames, we sustained no damage at home.

The replacement air control tower mentioned in the link is literally right next door to me at my place of work.

RE: Earth Quake

Well we are still rumbling on , yet another earthquake 2.4 at 0545hrs this morning. This is the 6th in a month. Needless to say we never noticed as we are about 11 miles out of Manchester. The comforting thing is that they are not increasing & we would never get something like Kingfisher did at 6.8. Fascinating though!!

RE: Earth Quake

You are still getting aftershocks? Those aren't too bad, though.

You really would not enjoy being in a big earthquake! It's quite frightening.
