On the way back from Chatsworth Country Fair we saw some signs for several well-dressings which I have always wanted to see but had never done. So Skip, I & the boys followed the signs to one Derbyshire village called 'Wormhill'. OK it was evening & the actual event had passed but people in the village had made scarecrows & you had to follow them to the actual well.On the scarecrow trail you also had to vote on which was the best scarecrow as they were all numbered. Mary Poppins got our vote although the vicar came a close second.
This years subject for the well dressing was Ely Cathedral.

There was a second well dressing, location indicated by one of the scarecrows.

Take a closer look, it was good however quite spooky to go round a village fulll of scarecrows.

This well dressing was started by children & parents 10 yrs ago where the theme was 'the stocks'. For their 10th anniversary they came back from University,Colleges,& High schools to pass on their experience. Notice the scarecrow is now in the stocks.

What a brilliant event! I haven't seen anything like it around here, but it looks very enjoyable and a great way of building community spirit in the village.

I've always thought that one of the best things about living in a small village is getting to know the residents through events like this, they must be a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Do you know which scarecrow won in the end?

Unfortunately not Riana but I'm sure there were many to choose from ,among those we saw were the pilsbury dough man , mary poppins , the vicar, a fireman & one really spooky one which was a clown. They were all over.

Here is a link that gives a brief explanation but if you use google it is very popular in Derbyshire & there are lots of events. I believe that Eyam is one of the big ones, that is one of the places where the black plague started if I remember rightly.
