Cod alternatives

I'm sure you've all heard of the crisis in cod fishing in the North sea, and how cod prices are set to rise as the effects of fishing restrictions come into place.

Is there any fish we can replace cod with to help the stocks recover? There must be many fish that taste just as good as cod and other traditional fish that we are all missing out on!

RE: Cod alternatives

There are plenty of other kinds of fish that aren't endangered that could be eaten, but I don't think they will ever replace the British tradition of cod and chips.

Fish like Bream and Coley can both be caught near the UK and you can eat them with a clear conscience as there is no evidence that they are at all endangered.

How about Mackerel, it's an oily fish so it's good for you and there is an abundance of them in the sea all around britain. you can go just offshore with a fishing rod and a feather and catch them yourself. They are only nice fresh so don't by them in the supermarket though. go to a fish mongers instead.

RE: Cod alternatives

I saw River Cottage at the weekend - it suggested carp. I ate carp in Prague not realising that the english don't eat it because it has a reputation of being muddy. I thought it was lovely! Old Furnley whatshisface got some of his own to put in his home pond (more like a lake compared to most peopleshome ponds!) to catch and eat in a year when they had grown. You just need to keep them alive in some clean water for 4/5 days to purge the mud taste out.

I would seriously consider doing this if my pond was not a wildlife pond - maybe when I have my smallholding in the country! Being self sufficient on eggs and carp for protein!
