RE: churn stands

I don't think that we would still have a lot of churn stands here but in more rural Lancashire there might be some. There is supposed to be quite a lot throughout the Dales in Yorkshire.
It raised the question in our household that perhaps we were more liable to see 'burying stones' around here. These were for resting coffins on en route to the church in times gone by & still make up part of the countryside in the dry stone walls.
When we are out & about we will certainly keep our eyes open for you.

RE: churn stands

Sorry for the stupid question! But what exactly is a churn stand and what do they look like? There may be some around where I live but I wouldn't know if there was! Icon_biggrin

RE: churn stands

I thought they might be wooden as I remember wooden stands at the end of the lane approach to a farm & seeing churns standing on them. I looked it up to be sire but the website I found was on about stone or concrete stands. I could understand stone ones being still there but not wooden ones unless they were still in use.
It's funny about what info you retain from being a child eg quite a few at work do not know what 'swaling' is or what ' stooks' are. I spent a lot of my time as a child down on the farm. Shame the old things are being lost.

RE: churn stands

Perhaps Clifford can clarify what he's searching for? Photos would probably be very helpful here.

RE: churn stands

sorry if i havent made myself clear churn stand were used between mid 1920s until mid 1970s to put the milk churns on for the collection of milk from farms they were usually found at the end of farm drives and were made from anything from wood ,steel, stone ane concrete they of course became redundant with the introduction of milk tankers.Over the years many have been cleared away due to road or drive improvements .
i would like to get as many pictures of any churnstands past and present to form a bit of a catalogue so if anyone can help me out that would be great if anyone is able to send me some pictures please can they record the location of the churnstand if possible me email address is clifford@freemansof newent.co.uk
I have attached a couple of pictures of what im looking for

I have to say I haven't seen any around, but I will definitely contact you if I do see some. Good luck with the project, let us know how it goes!

I enjoy it really so here is one we just happened to see on the A623 just outside Calver village, Derbyshire towards Baslow. I have emailed it to Clifford. Here is my first churn stand!
