Caterpillar Identification

Can anyone identify this caterpillar? There were literally thousands of them and they had stipped a willow(?) hedge bare. They also left a mass of silk behind covering they willow hedge

I've had a quick look on UK Moths website and I'm not cetain it is one of the Hawkmoths - whereabouts are you in the country Pogle?

Hi,

its a moth larva of the Geometridae group which have these stick like caterpillars and it looks like a Brindled Beauty to me.

Today's been the first day I've had a chance to read the replies to this post, so thanks everyone. Cheryl, the caterpillars were in North London and Neil thanks for the identification
