Hi.
Basically i'm just interested if anyone knows if you are allowed to keep lizards that you find or if there is actually a law against it?
No it's not for me, I think they should stay in their natural habitat, but I know of children doing this...
If there is a law as such I would like to point it out to certain individuals.
Hope someone can enlighten me.

It depends on the species.

Sand lizards are fully protected, and may not be possessed.
Common lizards may not be killed, sold, traded, etc., but it is not illegal to possess them.

On the other hand, non-native lizards, such as wall lizards, may be collected from the wild. It IS an offence to RETURN them to the wild!

I've seen one of them so i'm gonna look it up in a minute.
It's hard for kids to understand that they should really leave them be. I love taking my kids out to the woods to look for lizards and slow worms, I always make sure we replace any wood or rocks we look under, even i'm tempted sometimes, human nature I guess to always want what you shouldn't really have.
Anyway, thanks for the info', gonna browse before I fall asleep.

It's difficult to teach children both to love exploring nature and the environment while at the same time getting the message across that you should be a passive observer at all possible, but it sounds like your doing a good job! Did you find out what type they were?

They are probably more likely to be the common lizard, although which part of the country have you been watching them?
