Hi I'm new to this, though I have been watching butterflies on the Priddy Mineries for the last 10 years and just starting to find out names of them.

Does anyone else know this site. It's amazing, at this time of year there are hundreds of butterflies on a nice day. I don't know what they all are but I have seen lots of different species including Marble whites, skippers and fritillaries.

It's a hotspot for wildlife on the top of the Mendip Hills.

Does anyone know what this is? A friend took this pic in JUne. We thought it was a purple hairstreak, but now I'm not so sure?

Thanks

Thanks Badger, don't know how to make this pic any bigger, but would love to know what this little chap is? There's millions of fantastic butterflies out on the Priddy Mineries at the moment. Lots of brown ones too, think they might be ringlets? Does anyone have a species list of what they've seen on this reserve. That might help me ID things I see until I get the hang of it?

An NT site I regularly go to close to me - Frensham Great Pond - they have Silver Studded Blue too but I don't think this is the female of that as there are no orange markings. Can't think what else it can be ......

Whilst I'm here - I saw my first ever Small Copper the other day - I know it's already been mentioned in the sightings but here is a picture

I was thrilled to see it Icon_biggrin

nice pic - they are a great butterfly
I saw lots today in the heat, including my first 2 clouded yellows of the year - they wouldn't sit down for a photo though

RE: Butterfly Sightings

Just been out for a wander today and saw about 40-50 Scotch Argus.
Don't think we have had this one yet, so that makes it (34/63)

RE: Butterfly Sightings

Thanks for the pictures of the Scotch Argus, Andy - lovely butterfly, doubt I'll ever get to see one in real life Icon_sad

Have we had Grayling yet?

Forewings up and down - virtually impossible to get a picture with the wings open and they're so fluttery in flight - or maybe I'm too impatient Icon_biggrin

RE: Butterfly Sightings

hi battie

fef priddy mineries
from the main car park at shorthill if you cross the road and follow the main track after a couple of hundred yards there will be a bank on your right side, where this bank starts this is an excellent location for the marsh fritillary although i have only seen two at once but this fritillary has been there for several years to my knowledge.
this spot is good for many types of butterfly including small pearl bordered fritillary and green hairstreak.cant say ever seen purple hairstreak around there
the mineries is not far from stoke camp another good spot which
inclues chalkhill blue, essex skipper and small blue going a little further out and onto the somerset levels it is worth visiting shapwick apart from loads of rare birds it is good for butterflies one spot near the sweet track
is great for white admiral, dark green fritillary and purple hairstreak hope this helps lets hope for a better year next year as although i saw 38 varieties of butterfly very few were in the usual numbers.
