Congratulations to Markulous on winning the final competition of 2009 and Wild Canon on winning the overall competition for the year!

The top 3 members this year were:

1st - Wild Canon (80 votes)

3rd - Keith (33 votes)

Congratuations to all three of you and also a big thanks to everyone who entered this year. If you'd like to know your score then please contact Jamie.

As you know, this was Jamie's last month running the competition so a huge thank you to him from everyone at the forum. He's run the competition brilliantly and I'm sure you'll agree it's been a big success.

There will be no January competition this year but hopefully we should have something sorted for February.

Keith - maybe it was a female Brimstone which is much paler than the male.

Clouded Yellows do tend to be migrants - they don't like our wet and cold winters - a bit like me Icon_cheesygrin

I agree. There is good evidence that CYs now overwinter on the south coast but Pale Clouded Yellows are another species which are a much rarer migrant.

best wishes

RE: Butterfly Sightings 2009

I seen these ones..if anyone could ID the species / type for me & PM it to me or post it, it would be helpful as I am trying to get into butterfly watching but identifying them can be hard.

I spotted this at 15:08 today :

I spotted at least two of them courting and possibly a third today at 15:09-15:11 The first picture is of the same creature except I adjusted the contrast to make it easier to make out.

I also spotted this one too at 14:52. Its an 'Orange Tip' Anthocharis Cardamines

But I cannot ID the other two. They may even be of the same species.

Hi Phototoxin

Those be Speckled Wood. They are found in areas of dappled shade for most of the spring and summer.

Best wishes

RE: Butterfly Sightings 2009

Common Blue (16/63) seen on Thursday

the list so far is:
Red admiral
Comma
Brimstone
Small Tortoiseshell
Orange Tip
Peacock
Large White
Speckled Wood
Green-veined White

Wood white
(having re-looked at this I'm now thinking it is a green-veined white - 1. because wood white normally settle with closed wings and 2. because the dark markings on the wing tips are wrong - and 3. because it was quite an early sighting. A second opinion would be good)

Holly Blue
Small Copper
Small White
Small Heath
Dingy Skipper
Common Blue

RE: Butterfly Sightings 2009

Hi
just joined this forum to tell you of my sighting today.
Spent the day at a wedding at Offley Place, Great Offley, Nr Hitchen. SG5
24C and not a cloud in the sky all afternoon.
witnessed probably over 100 Painted Ladys , one every 2-to-3 mins, across a 6 hour period flying low & fast across the adjacent cricket pitch and then across the House gardens. all flying exactly due north.
i have never seen so many in 40+ years of spotting. Is this going to be another bumper year for the PL i wonder?

RE: Butterfly Sightings 2009

Large skippers are great.

I've been a bit busy but this warm weather has brought out much on the south coast including the many painted ladies coming in from bank holiday weekend. Great to see on the chives in my garden.

I saw my first grizzled skipper last monday along with pearl bordered fritillary and small pearl bordered fritillary.

so painted lady (16/63) 1996 was the last big influx
(i'm discounting the wood white -sorry)
grizzled skipper (17/63)
pearl bordered fritillary (18/63)
small pearl bordered fritillary (19/63)
large skipper (20/63)

also about - wall and glanville fritillary and probably marbled white should be due
