Brimstone Moth?

I found a moth this morning (or rather, it found me - it settled on the toe of my safety-boot!)

It was less than an inch across with the wings open, very sulphur-y yellow in colour and it had small brown markings on its wings

It was rather dozy, so I just put it down somewhere safe

I was wondering whether it was a brimstone moth, though the brown markings were a lot less defined than the pictures I have found, and I think my moth may have been a little too small

can anyone help me from this vague description?

RE: Brimstone Moth?

It was indeed a Brimstone Moth. I found another specimen yesterday and was able to look more closely. It was smaller than I imagined it would be, but the forewing markings were a giveaway

RE: Brimstone Moth?

Sometimes there are moths that are slightly paler or more pronounced in colour, it's what is called 'local variants' - for example in my area of Devon here we have very pale, almost cream like buzzards, in other areas they're darker!
