The name Ptarmigan is derived from the Gaelic, Tarmachan, which means “croaker” alluding to the strange noises that the birds make. The Gaelic name is commonly seen in hill names throughout the Highlands, such as Meall nan Tarmachan in the Ben Lawers range.
