To follow up on our Beaver story, a family of beavers who have been on the run in Perthshire are to be hunted down as they are now considered animal "outlaws"!

The search is due to begin in days, although it may not be that easy as it seems the adult pair have recently moved home - perhaps anticipating a backlash from the law Icon_smile

The beavers themselves haven't done anything wrong but they are considered eveidence as releasing wild animals not native to the country is against the law.

Quote:
Officially regarded as either "lost property" or "evidence", the beavers - it is thought there is one adult pair - have not themselves committed a crime, but as alien species their release into the wild was a criminal act.

Do you think this is any relation to the story about a beaver escaping earlier in the year? I thought that was only one beaver, but it could well have been two.

At least this answers our question "Can beavers survive in the UK" once and for all! I would not like the job of trying to catch the poor creatures.

Leave them be I say!

Aye, it would seem that the authorities would agree with you, riana, or there would not be such a fuss over two beavers. My guess is that it is suspected that not only will the beavers survive, but that they will start breeding. That would probably really not be a good thing Icon_sad .

Very true, breeding beavers in the UK without being properly introduced and controlled could be disastrous unfortunately.

I wonder if they ever caught the "outlaw" beavers. Secretly, I hope they escaped but I know that's irresponsible of me Icon_smile
I could find no recent mention of them in a Google search.
