Which is the UK native species that is now extinct here that you would most like to see back in the wild?
After a lot of thought about the positives and negatives of wolves, I would go for them. I understand peoples reserves about having a predator introduced, but I think most objections come from not really understanding the animal and common misconceptions. They are wonderful animals and it would be amazing to have the chance to see them in the wild.
Definitely the wolf - my favourite animal. The biggest problem, however, would be educating people to live with it. Unfortunately, of all animals it is the one that has the most undeserved reputation.

I can't seem to find out if the 'Irish Elk' ever lived in the UK proper, but if it did, I think that would be a glorious animal to see.

My choice would be the Great Auk, last British specimen was killed July 1840 in Scotland at Stac an Armin , St kilda. This is a species partly hunted to extiction, so this one deserves a "Juarasic park" come back.
I'd like to see the uk as it was a couple of hundred years ago with breeding Red-backed Shrikes, Great bustards and lots more Stone curlews!
I'd love to see red squirrels everywhere. I know there are still some in certain parts but it would be great to look out the window and see them.
I heard once that Lynx were found in the UK? If so, imagine having them stalking the countryside!
Also I heard on the news yesterday that the first polar bear remains found in the UK were discovered recently, although I don't think I would like the weather being cold enough to support them
I think I would also go with wolves. I think BBC Wildlife did a story about it last year, or maybe something on the tele. Was pretty interesting stuff, it was mainly centered on the amount of deer culling they have to do and how wolves would prevent that. There was also something on some guy with mega bucks - think he maybe owned MFI or something and has a huge wildlife estate in scotland. He had either already applied or was applying to reintroduce wolves on his estate which involved some serious fencing but was supposed to be a test ground for getting the public used to the idea. Realistically, I think that beaver are more likely, whilst it has been turned down once it is on the agenda again so maybe this time? I can't honestly say that they are quite as impressive as wolves in my opinion mind....
