I was thinking about my holiday in Italy last year and I rememberd an amazing experience I had with jellyfish there. We went out on a pedlo planning to have a swim when we got a little bit away from the shore but after a short distance we looked into the water and saw literally hundereds of jellyfish just beneath the surface - I've never seen so many of anything concentrated in such a small area.

The locals swimming didn't seemed bothered, either they didn't know how close they were to jellyfish or they knew they were harmless. Unfortunately I don't know which species they were but I'll try and find out.
I would imagine that if the locals were swimming in the sea they would definitely be aware of the jellyfish and the fact that the water hadn't been evacuated would suggest that the jellyfish weren't dangerous.

It still sounds like an amazing sight, did you get any pictures?
We had a similar occurrence of jellyfish in Bermuda...we weren't swimming, but the water was almost white from the jellyfish. They were tiny jellyfish, too.
