A few years ago after a haevy shower of rain I went down to the garden and noticed coming out of the ground what i can only think was a very thin worm, sort of grayish. It was waving about and looked very strange.

Any ideas any-one.
Hard to say senua. If it was a worm then it could be..
Aporrectodea caliginosa, A. rosea or Octolasion tyrtaeum, these have a grey appearence.

If smaller than these then check out the Nematodes? That's all i can thick of for the moment.
I hate worms. Yuk!!!
If it's any help it was just a bit thicker than thread and was coming out of the ground, waving it's body in the air.
Very difficult to tell, I'm sure there will be someone who can give you a good guess though. Hopefully they see this thread!

It was of been quite fun to watch it wiggling it's body around! I definitely haven't seen a worm do that before.
Going by your description, then i would suggest Gordian worm (horse hair worm), they are associated with water and are parasitic. They use a vast array of hosts, and can go through several in their life cycle. You way have spotted one that had emerged from one such host, the heavy down pour fooling the worm into thinking it was in water?
Thank-you, have had a look on line for pictures and have to admit it does look like the worm I saw.
