Has everybody heard of the governments plans to build several so-called "Eco-Towns" in the East Midlands? There are to be 3 in Lincolnshire, 2 in NW Leicestershire and one in East Leicestershire. Anyone who loves their wildlife and the environment should oppose this further decimation of what is left of our beautiful countryside. Online petitions against this contemptuous action can be found on the Downing Street website.

It does seem that if you call a town an "ecotown" and putin some token green features then you can build it wherever you want! To me it doesn't matter whether a town is ecologically friendly or not if it's destroying countryside and who knows how many habitats in the process.
Do you have a link to the petition? I don't know how much difference they actually make but it can't hurt.

I'm not even entirely sure what constitutes in "eco-town". Does it have strict criteria, or can it be a few token ways to reduce carbon emission? How it can friendly to the environment I don't know, perhaps the correct term would be "less eco unfriendly", as no matter how clean it is a lot of wonderful countryside is going to be destroyed and disrupted by it.
This is a hot issue! I signed up, and only the latest 500 signatures are being displayed...

I could b wrong but I don't think there is any strict crtieria, but a considerable effort has to be made to reduce carbon emission. As you say though it is never going to be as eco friendly as just leaving the countryside to its own devices.
