Visiting some friends recently, I photographed the results of a pigeon having flown into their kitchen window.

No, I think it flew off. 
Wow, that's incredible. It must have given it quite a whack to leave those marks, I'm surprised both the glass and bird survived in one piece!
Poor pigeon! I hope it was ok even after it had flew off, when the shock had set in. As Xeract said it must be strong glass otherwise I'm sure the bird would have gone straight through!
That reminded me of a couple of years ago when it happened on my computer room window but the angle was different but definately not mistaken about what had done it.
I find it amazing that it leaves the grease mark in such a fashion. We did have 2 goldfinches hit the window of the conservatory the other day as they were squabbling, but they were OK.
There definitely can't be any mistake to what has caused the marks, it is such a brilliant imprint. I haven't ever had a bird hit a window of mine before (fingers crossed it stays like that!), but it makes me worry when I see people put their bird feeders so close to windows. It is a disaster just waiting to happen.
Back in October 1988, I had a wryneck and a Nightingale in the same month flew into my patio doors, in a village near Doncaster in South Yorks. The wryneck flew off unhurt and the Nightingale left the next morning after a warm night in a box in my garden shed!
That was very nice of you to keep it warm for the night. I would have done the same thing.
Was the window involved in the pigeon incident double glazing?
I found a nice imprint of a Tawny Owl on my patio windows once too. Double glazed too!!
