For the last two nights at around midnight I have been woken up by a high pitched noise that happens every two seconds or so in a burst of five or six that I have never heard before. It's very difficult to describe a sound! But I haven't been able to see what is making the noise and I would love to know what it is.

I thought it might be a fox but I have heard their shrieking before and it doesn't sound like it at all. It also doesn't sound like a bird to me, but I could be wrong!

Any ideas?
It is very hard to describe and identify sounds, but what you describe does sound like a fox. Have you heard it since? Maybe you could get a recording?
Do you have tawny owls in your immediate area and are you familiar with their calls? The females have a high pitched "kuvic, kuvic, kuvic" call, which seems to be predominant at the moment.
I'm not familliar with their calls but it sounds very much like it could be one! I haven't heard it since, but it definitely wasn't a fox.
Wild Canon could very well be right, it sounds more likely than a fox as I have never heard a fox call in bursts like you describe this sound. Have a look around when it starts to get dark as you might catch a glimpse of the owl if it is one and they are amazing to see.
Hi
It does sound like it could be a female tawny.
Mine start screeching at around 8pm, and go on into the night, it can be very high pitched, although like most birds/animals they all make a varied sound depending on the situation.
After awhile I tend to hear the male answering maybe you can snuggle up outside and have a listen.
I know it gets boring but if you sit still long enough it might just give you a flying display, believe me it's worth the wait.

Some good advice from animal mad there, did you try going out to see if you get a glimpse?
I did try going out, only for a short time though, and no luck. I hadn't heard the owl that night so after a while I gave up.
