Hello @ all,

I have found this Forum with google.

Sorry...my english is not so good, I hope you understand me.

I have a little rescue station for young squirrels (licenced) since 4 years. I am 47 years old.

I want to know more about the situation with grey squirrels in GB. I read the news from Scottland. Good news!Icon_biggrin

What is the situation in other regions at time?

Greetings
Suzie
Hi Suzie62

Welcome to the site, great to have you on board. Your English is perfect Suzie. What part of Germany are you from as I lived there for a while.

You might find us a bit slow at times but it means that I can keep up.

We have squirrels here but more grey than red. We're trying to introduce more red to different areas.

Welcome again and keep posting.

Yogi.
Hi and Welcome!
Hi yogi and phyzzio,

thanks for welcome !

I live in Gruendau, a little Village 66 km east away from Frankfurt/Main.
I've heard that people in the UK try to develop a drug (birth control pill = anti baby) for the grey squirrels. Is it true?
And what is about the Pox Virus? Is there a experimental study vaccine against the virus? (To safe the squirrels). I've heard it, but I can't believe it.
How safe are the squirrels (sciurus vulgaris) from breeding if they are released?

bye

Hi Suzie & welcome

You have joined at the right time of the year, as hopefully more people will be posting messages as our warm weather comes.

You must have had very cold this year ?? The grey squirrels here in the south of England have been eating new buds on some of the perennial garden plants. I have seen this for the first time in my life. We unfortunately have only the greys where I live.

Look forwards to your posts.

Regards

Paul

Hello Paul,

thx for welcome! Icon_smile

Since 5 days... the winter is gone. We had a lot of snow for a long time. (3 month). But now.. I am waiting for the next baby squirrels, which need my help. The new Generation is born. Some Babys have been found, but not in my Region.

I think that the garden plants will help themthelves and get new buds. Icon_wink

It is very sad, that you can see only the greys. I hope it changes !

Can anyone answer of my questions?

Bye

Suzie
I lived in Berlin for two years and opposite where I lived was a cemetery which was the best cemetery I've ever seen. We used to go for walks around it as it was more like a park. Beautiful trees, bushes and shrubs, even a cafe. The nature inside was fantastic and it was full of red squirrels. They were so tame they used to run up your trouser leg and onto your shoulder waiting to be fed. We always went over with peanuts for them and as soon as they knew we had food they would come running. We saw foxes, deer, ducks nesting and all sorts of different birds and wildlife. It was nothing like our cemetery's we have here.

Hi yogi,

yes, squirrels likes cemetery's, because it is quiet in there. There are many conifers, which are very close, densely grow, very good for building a nest. The natural food supply is not enough in a cemetery, so they need extra feeding and they be very tame. I know, that many people feeding peanuts, but I think it is better to feeding hazelnut and walnut, because peanuts are not growing here in Germany. ;-)
The Problem is, that a few crazy people try to catch them and to make a "pet" of it.

Oh, oh my horrible english...I hope you understand what I mean.

Bye

I've just been onto Google Earth and found where I lived in Berlin, and the Cemetery - AWESOME memories.
