Despite inches of snow and their Pond bring completely frozen over, several of my frogs are seen to be swimming lazily around .... what should I do about them ??

Leave them ?? Move them to a sheltered water container ??

My wife's driving me mad with this, so ALL ideas gratefully received !!!!

Hi PlanManMike,

Welcome to the forum Icon_biggrin

When a pond completely ices over with wildlife or fish in it, poisonous gasses build up under the ice & it's important to make a hole in the ice to let the gasses out & fresh air in.. Not by smashing the ice though because the shockwaves & vibrations have the same effect as dynamiting in water & the shockwaves may well kill your frogs!! The best way I've found (so far) is to boil up some water in an old saucepan 'til the saucepan bottom is really hot, then place the saucepan on the ice until a hole has melted through, you may need to reheat the saucepan several times if the ice is very thick, you will need to do this daily @ this time of year! If you then place a football in the hole it will reduce the amount of ice that re-ices over the hole making it an easier job in future.
Covering the pond (leaving a 3-4" air gap between the water & the solid cover) before winter starts can also help to prevent ice-over, but often looks unsightly & dosn't always work!!
This year I'm experimenting with my ponds & after melting a hole in the ice I removed approx 4" water from each pond so that the remaining ice would act as a natural cover above the water, so far, only a little thin ice has reformed under the hole so that option is looking promising too.

Good luck

Sue

I always thought this Channel Tunnel was a bad idea, the frogs have obviously found a way of getting from it to your pond. Watch out for the illegal immigrants who'll be following!
