Does anyone have this same problem?
Feeders piled high with goodies. Plenty of likely suspects passing through. Tits, finches etc.
No takers. Next door neighbour has the same problem with his.
It's as if the local birdlife has given our feeders the thumbs down.
We have no cats. The quality of the stuff is good.
Weird...
Hello Jolanta
I have recently set up another feeding area in a differant part of the garden because I was fed up with the starlings hogging everything - so I have one area for the fat balls which the starlings love and another for the seed feeders - only the feeders remain almost unused. It's been like that for several weeks now. There's the same amount of cover from trees and hedges as the other area - so I'm at a loss to know why they don't like it.
I've since returned a seed feeder in the original position and the birds are happy to feed from that.
It's like when I do the Garden Birdwatch - none of my regular birds - like the wrens and GSW come to my garden over that weekend - isn't it always the way ......
I think its generally because at this time of year there is so much natural food they dont need to visit feeders. Nuts, seeds, berries etc are very plentyful at the moment. I just put a bit of food out and keep replacing the mouldy peanuts so the birds know that the food will be there come the colder months.
Do you have cover near the feeders Jolanta?I have mine near to trees and bushes so the birds have somewhere to go quickly if predators are around.
No, this is an ongoing problem and has lasted for many years. We just can't work out why they won't come to feeders in this particular neighbourhood when they do so quite happily a quarter mile away.
Have you got any garden predators that are scaring the birds away?
When I started photographing birds last year, I noticed that by September, the numbers on the feeders were down, just a few Tits and loads of Starlings. I think there's plenty of berries and bugs around at the moment.
When the harsher weather returns, they'll be back.
Keith.
