I thought the old guy (well he is older than me) was joking when he pointed out the Buzzards flying overhead one sunny afternoon, now I always know when they are around as the sky becomes strangely bird less and you can her the call distinctly, and one afternoon I had a closeup as the jackdaws bought one down in the oak tree at the top of my garden (the jackdaws must have had young close by) he/she flew off once they had gone and its a sight I never thought I would ever see.
Rural living does have its benefits.
You should see plenty of Buzzards in Wales, Glasfryn. Have you seen the kites yet?

not sure we have seen so many birds of prey on the fences and wires going to and fro to town but they are difficult to identify as we are crossing but I am sure one of them was a Kestral and I am sure I have seen one (maybe the same one) in the tree's that surround the field behind us ...but yet again the Rooks and Jackdaws seen him/her off.
we also have a regular Green woodpecker and Jays in the garden and for a townie who only ever saw a few puny sparrows is quite exiting.

roger.

We have buzzards even though we do not live deep into a rural area. We live on the edge of a river valley. We also have jays, no rooks or jackdaws but I would love to see a green woodpecker. We have a greater spotted but no greens. As for the buzzards all you have to do is look upwards which a lot of people do not bother doing.
We've always had buzzards here - the same pair for years as I can tell them apart by their markings when they fly over the house. There's a young one in the woods & he/she calls all day for food! They were teaching him/her to hunt last week, the wood pigeons didn't like it one bit! I talk to the buzzards here!
