That is a very worn specimen indeed, but i would say it is a Rustic Shoulder Knot or a Dark Brocade depending on what size it was.

but to me it looks like a very worn Mother of pearl moth (pleuropyta ruralis)

Having studied pictures of the suggestions on the internet and looked back at my original photos, I am of the opinion Andy's suggestion of a Rustic Shoulder Knot seems the most likely - it was very faded and tatty, but the size seems right and I think it has the correct markings, even though they are rather faint. Thanks both for your help.
