Hoping someone can help ID this red damsel fly photographed at the Priddy Mineries in June??

Just starting to learn about some of the insects, beetles, dragonflies and butterflies out there and lacking some knowledge.

Is there an 'idiots guide' to insects anyone can recommend?

Has anyone else been to Priddy and seen anything interesting? It's a haven for all sorts of wildlife.

Another superb picture. This looks like The Large Red Damselfly

Great shot. What camera are you using?

My book of 'Dragonflies and damselflies' is a Country Life Guide by Bob Gibbons. Some of the photos are not quite the right colours - and there is no pics of the females but it does have a very useful key & description of all the body bits. So at least when it when it comes to describing a key anatomical feature you know what it is!!

However if you want a 'bible' then Collins guides are hard to beat

Thanks Dave, they were taken by a friend of mine, not sure what camera, but I'll ask him. Thanks so much for your help. I'll check out those books and invest in one.

I'm totally bowled over by the butterflies esp at the moment. Another friend has seen the Downy Emerald Dragonflies out in Priddy, which I think is rather rare. They move so fast though that it's hard to see them and photograph them.

Many thanks

hi battie,

you nearly named it yourself it the thread title, it's a: Male Large Red Damselfly - Pyrrhosoma nymphula.

tell your friend; nice shot!
