Full Version: Can anyone name this plant?

ID please if anyone can -
I have found this plant growing by riverside and in ditches in Yorkshire and Scotland. The leaves, if chewed, are very hot on the tongue. The buds look as if they woulddevelop to little pink flowers but I have never seen them open any more than in the photo.
looks like persicaria hydropiper
or water pepper - hence being hot on the tongue!
Thanks for that , South Coast Ranger. Having searched a little further I now find that it is used in Japanese cooking, and that it is a memeber of the Polygonums and so is related to bistort.
(I am sure I posted this before. It seems to have disappeared)
