Yesterday a really small mammal, no longer than two of my fingers and a thin body, ran across the road infront of me. I was thinking it could be a weasel or stoat but aren't they much bigger than that? It could have been a baby, but then I didn't see its mother. It was brown, and I couldn't remember any markings on any part of its body. Anyone know what it could be?

Could it have been a Shrew?

I think it is most likely that it was a femail Weasel. A adult femail would be around 6ins long with a thin body and short legs making it run very close to the ground. When I see a Weasel it always amuses me because it always reminds me of a very small Dachshund dog.
Did it have a long and thin body? If it did then it must have been the weasel. If not then it could have been the shrew.
Hi, I am pleased you have worked this out as I have seen two recently and was wondering what they were. So a female weasel it is! great. Thank you
Weasels are surprisingly small! A lot of people think that they're ferret sized, but they're actually really small.
