Hi, i've registered on this forum just now, looking for some answers. Basically, today while driving up the A15 from Lincoln, not far from Ceanby Corner, i spotted a large bird that looked different to any i had seen before. At first i thought it was a kestrel/ hawk type thing, as i have seen many of these along the motorways on my travels. But on closer inspection, and after nearly crashing my van, i could have sworn it was an (please dont laugh) Eagle ??? it was much larger than anything i have ever seen, an owl first came to mind, but i have seen a few owls before and none looked like this. it was a light brown colour, with a slightly lighter tail, and seemed to be hovering ???
Explinations please ??? I'm intrigued !!!!

Right, if it was hovering, it was most likely to be a Kestral. They are one of the very few birds of prey that can actually hover. Kestrals are very fond of hovering on the side of roads becasue you have the small mammals and the lots of road kill as well. Yum!
i think it was too big for kestrel tho. it seemed to be hovering but maybe i am wrong ??
and what about the light tail ???
It may have only appeared to be hovering. I watched a buzzard this afternoon that was perfectly still, bracing itself against the wind. It remained in this position for a good two minutes.
Hi Titch, welcome to the forums.
As Mr Goob says it's possible that it might havebeen an optical illusion of sorts, but it's also possible it really could have been hovering. My guess would be a kestrel like jamie said, although if it was too big for one im not sure.
thanks for your help. No sign of it today.
Sounds like classic Buzzard behaviour to me. Welcome to the Forum titch.
I have been looking at pictures of buzzards and i think this is what i saw. never seen one before, so please ignore my thinking it was an eagle, haha.
Thanks for all you info.
