A nest of leverets

My new wildflower meadow is at last starting to green up and the first wildflowers are beginning to show
On a walk this morning I noticed a large patch of taller grass over towards the road, which obviously had not been killed when the original meadow was sprayed to prepare for the new seed
I took a walk over to have a look when a hare leapt out and ran away across the meadow. I looked to see where it had lain and discovered I think 5 little leverets (I didn't want to disturb them too much by getting too close)
I got a little on video which I will upload to my website when I get the chance
However ...here is a pic Icon_smile
Cute. eh?

RE: A nest of leverets

Lucky you.
I hope the farmer doesn't do the reseeding before they're off.
(if you know who he is and you tell him he may delay replanting for a couple of weeks - most farmers I've met are quite happy to do this)

The meadow belongs to myself Dave, and the re seeding has already been done for the wildflowers
So ... unless the hawks or buzzards get them ........

RE: A nest of leverets

Well ... she has moved them all to somewhere safer. Once the nest was discovered she was taking no chances
I am so glad I took the pics when it happened
Now I must put that little bit of video on line Icon_smile

RE: A nest of leverets

Well, the hawks and buzzards missed at least one, then.

Thank you for the update!

RE: A nest of leverets

Awwww what a lovely thing to find! As they're so secretive all the time, a definite chance in a life time opportunity to see those! We did have a leveret once in the garden here, but it wasn't as small as that & it was full of the joys of life doing cartwheels & back flips!

RE:The photo

A nice picture!

But is it a young hare or a young rabbit?

The picture of the young one in the grass is certainly a hare, probably the Mountain (Irish) Hare (Lepus timidus hibernicus) which is distributed all over Ireland and replaces the the European brown hare here. OK there are some brown hares in the North but their status is really uncertain.

If you look at the colour and shape of this young one the colour is rather light compared with the reddish brown of the first picture.

What do others think?

RE: A nest of leverets

There is a big difference to me between a rabbit and a hare (young or not)
This is most definitely a young hare Icon_smile

It's def a young hare - notice the big back legs even at that age & the black tips on it's ears Icon_smile

RE: A nest of leverets

I have it on video and the long back legs are even more noticeable in real life
I will update my 'hare' video on the internet when i get the chance Icon_smile
